THE DEVLINS
"WAITING"
RADIO UNIVERSE RECORDS
Dublin, Ireland based group The Devlins have just brought
their second album "Waiting" on to the alternative rock
music scene. With a great many songs on the album that fit right
into the typical mode of the music of the '90's, there is
definitely some potential for them to make it big.
I noticed that many of the songs on the album had a touch of
blues influence to them, which was kind of a nice touch, despite
the fact that they are an alternative band. Lead singer Colin
Devlin, whose voice can be compared to the lead singer of The
Cure, seems to lend a special touch to their music, and although
it doesn't stand out in your mind, his vocals do add a little
more to the music.
Many of the lyrics in the songs seem to be written with a lot of
emotion behind them. For instance, the title cut,
"Waiting" told of getting through life day-by-day, and
always waiting for more. "Disappear" also has a strong
message to it, it tells people to just stand back and think about
what they're doing in their lives for a moment.
Musically, although the guitar and drums lacked energy, there was
some good keyboarding that a hand in making the songs sound more
alive. The song "Reckless" was the best one on the
disc, not only was it good musically, it also demonstrated the
singer's range as well.
The one thing that I had to say about this album was that too
many of the songs on it sounded too much the same - they lacked
variety. It was when you were waiting for an intense guitar solo,
or a fast drum beat, you just didn't get it. However, there is
enough potential for these guys to keep going with what they're
doing, because they will grow with time.
