The debut album “Babydoll’s Kitchen” from blues and American roots Connecticut-based band Carl Ricci & 706 Union Ave is an all original 11-track powerhouse example of keepin’ the blues alive and kickin’.
The name of the band is fun. 706 Union Avenue is the address of Sun Records, the birthplace of Rock & Roll, as the legend goes. Careers launched there include Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, B.B. King and Howlin’ Wolf.
Ricci and the band most recently were a 2025 semi-finalist at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. The band is: Carl Ricci on guitar, Johnny Marino on harmonica/guitar, Michael Rush on bass and Dennis Cotton on drums.
The opening track “Blow Torch” is exactly that, with prominent harp blowin’ from Marino in a swing-heavy 1-4-5 instrumental, which builds and builds and gets you ready for the rest of the album. This is a tight band that has been ‘round the block a time or two. “Dr. Doctor” pleads for a cure, and the answer is right here: some serious guitar. The minor key “My Kind of Blues” is a haunting, subdued number again with prominent tasteful guitar. “She’s in my Soul” is dance-hall ready and super fun.
The title track “Babydoll’s Kitchen” is a funky, double meaning amusing story of a kitchen (and a woman). It’s a joy. “Back Door” is steady and strong while “Elberta” is traditional blues at its best. “I Hear You” is an eerie shufflin’ cheatin’ song. “Ruby Lipstick” is lively with the drive comin’ up from the bottom. “Look at You, Looking at Me” is a retro throwback toe-tappin’ number. The closer “Strollin’ With Mr. Earl” wraps the album up in a super tight little bow and brings our journey to a satisfying end.
These cats got talent. It’s undeniable. Give ‘em a listen.
